World Music Contest trip - 2005 PART ONE
Ok i really need to start writing about the trip before i forgot some of the details. Ok first let me start on the first day which was 11th july.
11th July
Well i remember i went to attend sch until 4pm before going to home to check my luggage again. I was very excited and i was feeling quite high. Can go overseas mah and no sch for 2 weeks.My father brought me to the airport. Wooooo. I must say our airport is damn nice. Soon i realise my luggage was quite small compared with others. But nevermind i pack light wat. As time flies, we all entered the airplane. Man i was thinking is this real. Am i going to Holland to take part in WMC? Before i could answer that, i need to prepare for my 13 hour plane trip. super long sia.
12th July
The plane trip was cool. It was my first time taking a Singapore Airlines airplane. Thought that it would be for rich people ones. Anyway, i must say that the air trip was quite uncomfortable. Some of the food was bad. Lucky got some entertainment(movies,music,radio,games..) for us.
And so we reached Holland. Woohoo. And from the airport, we took a 3hr bus ride to a town called Kerkrade. This was the place where the contest was held. So long sia. At that time i was dead tired. Still have to take a 3hr bus ride sia. As the bus go along, i saw alot of cows, low houses and many grass. Pretty nothing much to see. I felt like im in Malaysia.
Finally we reached Kerkrade. Actually i was quite susprised when we entered the town. There were very less people. I dun see many people around. Their houses were nice. Soon the bus brought us to the hostel where we were be staying for about 6 days. I think can get a taste of army life when i see the hostel. Hahaha. Soon, we began exploring the town. Ya forgot to talk about the weather. It was COOL just like in aircon room. I like it but my lips were dry. Need to put moisturiser but i din bring. I thought it is useless but i was wrong.
13th July to 16th July
Basically, we were having band practices everyday. As the days go by, i think 3 foreign bands came to the hostel and stay. One of them was the Thai marching band. Man they were great. Just like those marching bands in the movie (Drumline). They were simply "wow" us. The others bands came from Norway, Spain...
Now let me talk about the food we had in hostel. Bread , Bread and more Bread!!! Ahhhhhh. Scary sia. We were having bread for day 1 to day 6 for breadfast and LUNCH!!! Always having the same taste of ham and the cheese. Sometimes their food is very salty. Anyway, got the chance to taste ham and the people there are very nice.
As the days pass by, i realised there were alot of eldery people at there. And they were very high tech. They do not use any wooden walking stick to help them. Instead they use a transport vehicle that look like a motorised wheelchair. They had many dogs too. But true enough i haven see a cat at there.
During this period, we went to burg rode in germany just by walking. I was shocked sia. I was shocked that we could actually walk to Germany? from Kerkarde. Then on 15th July , Friday, most of the percussionists went to Aachen by bus in the morning. It was our free day. We went to eat a hotdog bun there. It was nice. See alot of old houses there like the old churches. I must say it was really really beautiful and magnificent. After that we went back to Kerkrade to see percusion ensemble contest. Can see some of the percussion ensemble was quite bad. But it was a good experience for me.
17th July , Sunday
Finally, the day has come. We were practising very hard for almost 1 year for this day. In the morning, we had our last practice then we go change up and soon we proceed to our competition area. Our competition time was in the afternoon. I was excited and nervous. When we reach there, we took some pictures. Soon we going to the stage. I was trying to calm myself down. At this time , the pressure was so great that one tuba player broke down and cry. Shocked sia. As someone had said , WMC does not means We Must Cry. It means We Must have Confidence!!! And so we went to stage and perform. I was really praying hard that nothing will go wrong such as the wind chimes fall down or something like that. However some of the things were not in my flavour like i did play my part loud. Something like that. Soon everything were over. I felt ok about the performance.
The next band came and performed. We were waiting for the results so we went to see the next band. Sursprised that the speed for the song was really slow. After the third band had finished their songs. It was the time for the results. They were going to annouce the results of 3 bands. The first band get 87.00 points. The next band they going to annouce was NYP wind orchestra. WOOOOHOOOOOOO..!!!! we got 86.92 points and we got GOLD!!!! Every band member jumps out and yell!! and shout!! I was happy really happy that we get gold. The third band got a lower marks than ours. At that time our laoshi cry. Too happy for us. As he cry, some of us began to cry. I felt like crying too after i saw laoshi cried. Very emotional. One of the emotional days i ever saw. After that we went took photos and i bought a live recording cd that recorded our band playing. When we get back to hostel, some of the foreign members clap for us that we get gold. Ok this is the part i felt really happy and proud of myself. The live recording cd was played everywhere in one of the room an din the canteen. When everyone of us compliment each other on the way we played. Everyone felt good. After one year of hard work and many practices, we finally get a gold. I felt that this sentence is true. (Practice makes perfect) In order to succeed, we had to keep on practice and practice. We all practised until we could memorise the music. I was happy. I was feeling high. Wooohooooing at that time.
Ok i had to stop here. This is my WMC trip part 1. Very long sia. In part 2, i will be writing about our stay in Frankfurt, Germany. We went there after the competion date which was 17th July.
